issue 4

In our culture today, Do to media  slim is thought to be highly desirable. In young girls especially the thought develops that to be thin is to be beautiful and to be beautiful, is to be popular, and to be popular is to have a happy life. This probably comes from culture role models such as fashion models, beauty queens, and movie stars where skinny equals success. The number of increasing victims is found to come from a certain group with many factors leaving people susceptible to this disease. Anorexia is more common among professions that stress thinness such as models, dancers, and gymnasts. Another aspect the majority of anorexics have in common is that they come from wealthy, Caucasian families. 50% of Anorexics have a history of sexual abuse, thus sending their self confidence to all time lows. Females ages 15-19 make up 40% of all anorexics, with females in general making up 90% (WebMD). From cultural pressures and the universal desire to be thin, more and more people are putting themselves at risk for horrors they are ignorant of. According to the New York Times health guide article Anorexia Nervosa found at http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/anorexia-nervosa/causes.html, “On the one hand, advertisers heavily market weight-reduction programs and present anorexic young models as the paradigm of sexual desirability”. I proposed a solution to this crisis involving educational involvement and better images of body portrayal having the media play a huge role on the way women look at themselves  plays a huge role on why people may become Anorexics.

Issue 5

When Reading issue 5 I strongly agree with Anderson that violent video games encourage young adults and kids on violent act. Even in this issue when they tried to explain why video games did not influence violence in children they still could not support their reason and even straight that it does influence some acts of violence.
When you look at times before video games were around we had movies and TV shows that we had to worry about children getting influenced about violence in the wrong way. When video games first came out they were not that violent and had not as much effects as they do today.
Video games today look so real and are not realistic to how society works. Some video games have such violent acts in them and have no consequences to what would happen if they made those mistakes in the real world. Children can believe in things so easily like Santa and the Easter bunny so what stops them from believing  in their video games if they were to hurt someone like in their video games that there are no consequences.

RA 1

Jeff Fager
Executive Producer
"60 Minutes", CBS
524 West 57th Street
New York, NY 10019

Dear Jeff Fager

I remember when I was growing up, how 60 Minutes was a well-respected and hard-hitting investigative news forum, and was a staple on Sunday nights in so many homes across the country. 60 minutes has been something I have watched as a kid. I used to hate the fact that my Dad would watch the show religiously but I learned to love it.
I think that 60 minutes does a great job at getting the truth about what is going on around the world. 60 Minutes also has a great source of getting people that are   not willing to be interviewed to get interviewed. When our country was hit by the two planes into our trade center and we lost so many great people. This made our country rely even more so on the news. Well other news told bits and pieces of what was going on with our Government and why someone would do something like this to so many innocent people. The News jumped on the fact that this was a terrorist attack and our country felt like we were on edge some people wanting to jump into war. A lot of the society had no idea about the real truth about why we were attacked and there was even controversy that we did this to ourselves. I applauded that 60 minutes was able to gain the trust of Saddam Hussein and was able to get the “first television interview, FBI Agent George Piro tells Scott Pelley how he won the confidence of Saddam Hussein and got the truth out of him in a seven-month interrogation.” This helped our society to put at least a face to this upheaval and understand what needed to be done.
I have visited 60 minutes web page and I have to say that out of many other sources of news you web page is the easiest to get around and find what you are looking for. Unlike other sources there are very few advertisements and information that is not needed in our source of information in our society. You can pull interviews from 10 years ago by your search engine When watching some of your shows I have to say you guys take the blunt approach. Unlike other news 60 minutes gets to the point and are not afraid to cross the line this what makes you guys different you are able to get the information that no one else can that is probably why  60 Minutes has the most successful programmed in US television history. Acknowledged masters of investigative reporting since 1968. Home of such broadcasting legends as Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite and Christiane Amanpour. Synonymous with blowing Watergate and Vietnam wide open on the screens of a nation. Winners of 78 Emmy Awards.
The only thing that I was kind of disappointed with when ready your blogs on your web page that they were open to the public a lot of people were upset about some of your showings and how some of your interviewers took the wrong approach. I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but the reason 60 min does so well is do to the fact that they are willing to all you can to get good factual information I think that you should keep you segments the way they are and I hope this letter helps you with the positive view about 60 minutes.
Thank you for your time

California Election

When I started to do my research on the upcoming election all I knew was what I have seen on the news and Commercials on Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown. They commercials that I watched were pretty hard not to get mad about the things that you heard about Whitman or Brown. It kind of hard to get I true feeling for who I wanted to vote for. I didn’t even know what day that we hard to vote.
When doing more research and staying away from commercials I started by just goggling both of Whitman and Brown this helped me a little bit but I was stilling busiest information when I started to look at web sites like politics 101 I started to just get the facts about both candidates. I learned both of their views and what I thought witch candidates most fit my views.
I also found that they can be Governor for two terms witch I think is a pretty long time and it is important that we get the right person in office. We also vote November 2, 2010 I also found out that there was more than Whitman and Brown running there also is a candidate that is running Chelene Nightingale. But you don’t hear much about this candidate. There are also many more candidates that are running like Laura Wells, Dale Ogden, and Carlos Alvarez.
I few things that learned about Whitman on education she supports “policies that will allow undocumented immigrants admission to state- funded institutions of higher education”. On Marriage she believes that the same sex couples should not be able to adopt children. She supports Abortion rights but not after late term abortion. She is not for legalizing Marijuana.
I also learned something about Brown. I thought it was interacting that Brown declined proposition 8 when on all of those commercials they say other whys.

Issue 9 Does Fake News Mislead the Public?

Issue 9 Does Fake News Mislead the Public?

Fake news in our society today plays a bigger part in the way that younger viewers are getting their information. This source of information raises the question on how creditable the information that these young viewers are getting from “fake news.”

In the article No Joke by Julia R. Fox, Glory Koloen, and Volkan Sahin talk about Fake news being a negative source of news. They talk about the election year in 2004 and younger voters played a bigger portion then normal with that number is increasing. The age of people voting under 30 is more than we have seen in 12 years. With this number increasing they look at where this portion of the population is getting their information from. They found that a big portion of this population gets there information from other sources then the daily news and more comically based news like the Daily Show. A research center surveyed that 21% of under 30 voters said, “they relied regularly upon comedy shows such as The Daily show with Jon Steward for complain information.” This is a big portion that rely on Fake news that in a lot of cases don’t give u the right information.

The Other article Late- Night Learning talked about news and how comedy based news is part of new way people can learn public affairs. They article states that these helps improve recognition and recall. Witch I think is not completely true, the article even states that Steward from the Daily Show can’t believe that there is a portion of people that just rely on his show for there campaign information or news. Shows like these were made for entertainment and not a source of news.

Are American Values shaped by Mass media?

When reading issue one I first thought about what my point of view is on the question asked, “Do I believe that American Values shaped by the mass media?”I am a person who believes that the mass media shapes American values. When reading the two points of views the first view by Herbert I. Schiller viewed that the media does influence the American values. The second view by James W. Carey is one that does not believe that the media shapes American Values. Both of these points of view did not persuade me either direction. If I had to pick the stronger argument it would be Schiller’s view because it was clear and had valid points.

Schiller talks about “five myths that structure the media.” He also talks about money being too much of what drives the central part of the news and not the important events occurring in society. James tries to talk about how transmission models through communication. Through his part of the argument I think he supports why it has a negative content toward the media and does not come up with a lot of support towards the media being good American Values.

Neither one of the articles went into a lot of depth in how the internet is a big focus in our society through communication. Also how more people are getting there sources through computer and not television and news-papers. This would I think make a totally different view on the media.
