Are American Values shaped by Mass media?
When reading issue one I first thought about what my point of view is on the question asked, “Do I believe that American Values shaped by the mass media?”I am a person who believes that the mass media shapes American values. When reading the two points of views the first view by Herbert I. Schiller viewed that the media does influence the American values. The second view by James W. Carey is one that does not believe that the media shapes American Values. Both of these points of view did not persuade me either direction. If I had to pick the stronger argument it would be Schiller’s view because it was clear and had valid points.
Schiller talks about “five myths that structure the media.” He also talks about money being too much of what drives the central part of the news and not the important events occurring in society. James tries to talk about how transmission models through communication. Through his part of the argument I think he supports why it has a negative content toward the media and does not come up with a lot of support towards the media being good American Values.
Neither one of the articles went into a lot of depth in how the internet is a big focus in our society through communication. Also how more people are getting there sources through computer and not television and news-papers. This would I think make a totally different view on the media.
